summa daze + youtube heavy + go harris + raelets & supremes + i’m not even off anything! + …………………..
***Updating this post pretty late (Wednesday) as I spent time tending to a headache the past few days and limiting my screen time 😛
*Ya know I love a good hand clap, but this ep is more of a cool, consistent finger snap, I would say.
*Since the 80’s TV show Alf doesn’t get nearly enough credit for being so great, I like to talk about it a lot. Anyway, the first 30 minutes of Ricochet I’m trying to figure out why the Youtube videos I’ve set aside for the show wouldn’t load, and sure enough it was because my teenager was using my YouTube account to watch Alf season 2…without me!
Once we got all that straightened out I played my summer jamz and talked for a while about Kamala Harris, voting, counterwill and how I thought I had Alzheimer’s when I was 35, racism in America, and all the other hot Saturday night topics!
*Being white isn’t all about privilege, sometimes it’s embarrassing! Trying to process the ridiculous behavior of someone many consider an acceptable presidential candidate, there’s no need to wait until February or Juneteenth to celebrate the brilliance of black culture in music. Thanks Trump for reminding me that it is always the right time to listen to and lift up voices of the global majority! With Peter Gabriel and Bill Callahan repping as our “token” white men 😛
*Rundown of Harris’ resume and why it’s insulting and racist to call her a DEI candidate, and how I came to support her.
*Mass incarceration could and should be addressed as a healthcare crisis that is a direct result of systemic racism rather than a problem within black culture. I had a hard time finding the words “healthcare crisis” and kept calling it- a result of the insidious virus that is white supremacy, which is also accurate yet quite dramatic, and I think I might have said incipient instead of insidious, as I was getting flustered at that point. It was a ricochet rant for sure.
*2 YouTube videos inspired my show this week:
Chillin with Erykah & Reggie ~ This hang-out sesh with Erykah Badu, Reggie Watts, and Marc Rebillet made me want to fucking live my life. Made me want to play, make sounds and music, speak in tongues, cheer for my friends, and of course made me want to hear that Badu sound on and on and on and on and on repeat until infinity. Reggie Watts is a famous beatboxer and musician who incorporates comedic elements into hip-hop and was (is?) the bandleader of the Late Late Show with James Corden. Marc Rebillet is the upbeat DJ who had that “Ya can’t get shit done if ya don’t show up” viral TikTok, and now has a show on Twitch called We’ve Got Company.
The second YouTube video that popped up on my feed recently was a live Ray Charles concert from Brazil 1963. I added it to my “Watch later” list and saved it for a rainy day- the days delivered with plenty of afternoon showers lately. This whole set hooked me from start to finish and led me to want to learn about the amazing Raelets, Charles’ famous backup singers most of whom go on to their own fabulous solo careers. The orchestra, The Raelets, the effortlessness of Ray Charles voice and piano playing, the old video footage, I dare ya not to smile!
I’ll play the second part this week coming up.
